Peter Westmacott

Sir Peter Westmacott is a senior British diplomatic, who was Ambassador to Turkey (2002-06), then Ambassador to France (2007-11) and finally Ambassador to the United States (2012-16).

Sir Peter attended New College, Oxford. He then joined the Foriegn and Commonwealth Office in 1972, his first overseas posting being as Second Secretary at Tehran in 1974. In 1978, he want sent to the European Commission, Brussels and from 1980-84 he was in Paris. After a period in London he was in Ankara as Head of Chancery from 1987.

In 1990, he was Deputy Private Secretary to the then Price of Wales, now King Charles II, and in 1993 he was sent to Washington to serve as a Counsellor. Later postngs included Director of the Americas in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and Deputy Under Secretary of State.
