Baroness Thangam Debbonaire is a British MP who served for Bristol West from 2015-2024.
Baroness Debbonaire undertook the first stage of a mathematics degree at Oxford, leaving before graduation, while at the same time training as a cellist at the Royal College of Music. She went to St John's City College of Techonology, Manchester and subsequently gained an MSc in Management, Development and Social Responsiblity at the University of Bristol.
Before being elected to Parlilament she was a professional cellist. At the 2015 General Election she was elected as Labour MP for Bristol West. She was appointed shadow Arts and Culture Minister in January 2016, but resigned in June owning to a lack of confidence in the then Party Leader, Jeremy Corbyn. She rejoined his frontbench in October as whip, before being made Shadow Brexit MInister in January 2020. She then served as Shadow Secretary of State for Housing 2020-2021, Shadow Leader of the House of Commons 2021-2023 and Shadow Secretarty of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
Baroness Debbonaire endorsed the remain campaign in the 2016 Brexit Referendum. Her own constitutuency of Bristol West voted to remain by 79.3% - the third-largest percentage result for the Remain campaign by parliamentary constituency. Despite being a Labour whip herself, she stated in she would vote against triggering Article 50, a three-line whip vote. In 2018 she stated she did not support a referendum on the Brexit deal, citing that there was insufficient public support for a final vote on the deal.
She has opposed MPs holding second jobs. She also supports grearer regulation of alcohol and has called for "evidence-based policy review" of the laws around drugs.
